| Subject: Pumping machine with cogwheels Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:36 pm | |
| This mechanism is complex, comprised of two parts: two interlocked cogwheels, which convert the horizontal movement into vertical, thus moving the chained pump. In Arabic, this mechanism is called saqiya and is widely popular. The cogwheels, as well as the chained wheel, are hellenistic inventions and this combination must have occurred around 200 B.C. in Egypt. This mechanism is used until today in Arabic countries mainly. In the Greek dominion its use has been detected only in one place: in Perachora of Corinth, near Loutraki, where probably the whole construction was of a large size and even double. | |
